Sacred Ground Spanish Mustangs

In 1993, Jerry and I decided that we wanted a horse.  We lived on a small farm in South-Central Texas, had two children and a few dogs.  We thought a couple of horses were just what we needed.  Jerry had an idea of what he wanted in  a horse, but didn't think we'd be able to find any.  He had talked of the tough little horses that the Indians in our area had ridden.  Of the horses that were ridden by the early Texas Rangers and the Pony Express.  They were quick, tough, rugged horses that needed little maintenance.

We accidentally came across an ad in a local newspaper advertising a Spanish Mustang.  We drove to Austin, Texas and came home the proud owner of a fine red and white Tobiano Pinto filly.  Soon afterward, we traveled a little further north to purchase our stallion, Sacred Ground.  He is presently about nine years old and is a gorgeous Grulla with a very long mane and tail!

Little by little we built our herd up to five, including the stallion and one lease mare.  In 1998 we ventured up to Oklahoma intending to come home with an additional mare.  We did purchase that mare, but came home to find that South Texas had been inundated with torrential rains.  Our entire field was under water and there were no fences, trees, or horses to be found.   We would recover two horses, those being the stallion and one mare, Star Star.

Two very gracious breeders in Oklahoma donated fillies to us to help us restart our breeding program.  Others volunteered, but we declined, knowing that it would be some time before we could rebuild the fences.  Other breeders in our area donated their time to help remove debris and build fences.

Today, we still have Sacred Ground and he has a small band of six mares.  Each year we produce four or five brand new, beautiful little Spanish Mustangs!  Including a few yearlings and two year olds, we currently have eighteen horses!

EASY KEEPERS!!

One of the things we like most about our horses is that they are really easy keepers.  They normally do not need shoes, and will eat almost anything that grows green, including weeds!  The only ones that get any grain are those that happen to be in a pen. Those that are in the pasture do not get any grain whatsoever.  It is simply not needed.  Our stallion, Sacred Ground, is the only one in a pen at this time and he gets plain old coastal hay and a pound of Omalene twice a day.  We do not recommend feeding any hay with a real high protien count, such as Alphalfa or Peanut Hay.  We do not have any stalls and when needed, they get under the trees for protection.   We seldom need any veterinary assistance, except for Coggins and such.  They have a natural ability to heal quickly with just hydrotherapy. They have such good common sense that they seldom get themselves into any real trouble.
